How would you describe S.COUPS’ leadership?
MG The role of a leader is obviously so important, but I think as time goes on, I feel like now, he’s also just one of 13 - I want to lift the burden of being a leader off of his shoulders.
You’ve spent so many years together and seen one another grow. In what ways do you think your personalities have changed over the years?
WW I think I’ve become brighter [smiles].
MG, SC, VN That’s right.
SC Wonwoo has become brighter. I think Mingyu has always been positive. Vernon seems like he’s a third party, thinking on his own….
MG He needs to be reprimanded.
Within the Hip-Hop Unit, who has grown the most since your debut?
MG Grown? Wouldn’t it be Vernon? He’s become bigger compared to then [laughs.]
VN Oh… Physically! [Laughs]
MG I think mentally, we’re all similar.
SC Vernon does the most within the unit in terms of producing, too, so I think musically as well. There’s a lot I learn from Vernon when we’re working, producing things for our unit. He helps, and I go to him for advice, too. And when looking at results, the member who has improved the most is always Mingyu.
MG [Surprised.] Oh?
SC When writing lyrics, Wonwoo is the type to be really quick and good, so that’s just the norm now. But with Mingyu, he struggles when it comes to writing.
MG It’s so hard….
SC So I see him and worry - “Is it going to come out okay?” But then when I see the final product, Mingyu always surprises me. I think he’s grown the most.
As the Hip-Hop Unit, where do you look for inspiration, whether it’s music or fashion?
MG Instagram for me. I think it’s the fastest way to see trends.
Aside from hip-hop, what genres or styles of music do you like?
MG I like band music, and country as well.
Is there an artist you like?
SC [Laughs.] He searches “band music” on YouTube and finds a good playlist.
MG When we were in Japan, I found Japanese bands that I like too.
What do you think CARATs love most about SEVENTEEN?
MG That we’re handsome. I think it’s time for us to get recognized for our visuals!
What’s your favorite thing to hear from fans?
MG He’s insane. [In English] “He’s crazy.” Like seeing us onstage and being like, “Wow, that was insane. Wow, they’re so cool.” for comments like that to come out naturally.
Other than your members, is there anyone you go to for advice or support?
MG I think because the worries we have are not common for most people, we need to have these conversations with people who can relate and understand us. To others, they could seem like champagne problems.
Do you spend a lot of time together when you’re on break as well?
SC I play sports with Mingyu.
MG Personally, I’d like to have a meal with Seungkwan… Don’t know why he’s so busy. He doesn’t contact me back. He always has plans already.
SC That’s how I feel about you! I want to eat and play with you, but you always have plans!
MG But I still answer your calls.
SC You don’t answer calls! [Laughs.]
All right, last question. Is there anything new you want to learn this year?
MG English.
SC You are learning it.
MG Yes, but I want to try harder. As if my life is on the line.
Your life?
MG I’m going to learn it!
SC I’m learning now, but near the end of the year, I want to compete in a jiu-jitsu tournament. I saw Tom Hardy compete and thought it was amazing.
MG Just don’t go out there and embarrass yourself.
SC That’s also an experience!
MG If you do that, I’ll go on Weverse and post the time and date for S.COUPS’ competition. We can make a good event out of it.
